The Cries of San Francisco is a project by Allison Smith in collaboration with Southern Exposure that invokes the historic tradition of street peddlers hawking their wares with melodic songs and calls as a means of offering up social revelations on the temporal employments, habits, and callings of nearly 70 Bay Area artists, craftspeople, and other urban workers. The Cries of San Francisco takes the form of a public art event centered around Mint Plaza, a sculptural installation and a series of events at Southern Exposure, and a publication chronicling the project.

Originally inspired by The Cries of London, a centuries-old iconographic tradition encompassing thousands of storied images depicting city street merchants offering a range of goods and services, from primroses to rat catching, The Cries of San Francisco is an interdisciplinary project that invites participants to make and sell crafted wares on Market Street, while “crying out” publicly on subjects of their own choosing. Merchants of food, flowers, sand, and matches; charcoal vendors and chimney-sweeps; basket sellers, knife and scissor grinders, chair menders, and love song writers: in urban folklore, whether as trickster border-crossers or as anchorless outcasts, street criers represent a liminal space between worlds. Questioning the essentialized personification of trades that historically locate economies of craft in and on the body, and by using the framework of historic street cries to articulate new subject positions, this project presents participants with an opportunity to consider their roles in historical processes. With a unique combination of soapbox speech making and sculptural drag, The Cries of San Francisco offers a crossroads in which our identities as artists, makers, independent contractors, small business owners, citizens, immigrants, or outsiders can be negotiated, performed, and addressed publicly.

The Market Day public art project is the central element of The Cries of San Francisco. On June 4th, 2011, the project will center around Mint Plaza and adjoining blocks of Market Street. Led by Allison Smith as the Town Crier, nearly 70 participants engage in the project, offering goods or services embodied by elaborate sculptural costumes and advertized through the melodic street cries called out by each participant. Exchanges take the form of ephemeral acts and actions that cross and blur boundaries of public and private space while others serve as a parody on commodity exchange and the capitalistic nature of the art market, offering up potentially useful models for contemporary artists working in times of economic uncertainty.

Allison Smith presents a sculptural installation at Southern Exposure that serves as a public house and market hall where participants gather to perform and record their cries and to trade and peddle their wares to the public. The exhibition includes sculptures, works on paper, and ambient sound, creating a tangible stage set for social interaction, dialogue, events, and market days.

Miranda Texidor's Love Poems @ Cries of San Francisco

Miranda Texidor’s Love Poems and Letters of Recommendation

Drawing from the beautiful Latin American tradition of writers like García Marquez. Isabel Allende, and Hernan R. Letelier, whose characters aided people in writing poems of love to their unattainable loves and letters of recommendation for a possible job, Miranda Texidor, my artistic persona, will be peddling her wares in the streets of San Francisco. She plans on wearing a full costume consisting in a handmade flowery dress, hat, and shoes. She will be carrying a portable rolling suitcase made for the purpose with an incorporated table, chair and writing accouterments. This action is an iteration of the one already performed in the Plaza de la Independencia in Quito Ecuador in 2007. The main difference is Miranda Texidor´s full gear with costume created specially for this performance. It will be conducted both in English and Spanish to better serve all populations.

Partiendo de la bella tradición de escritores latinoamericanos como García Marquez, Isabel Allende y Hernán R. Letelier, cuyos personajes asistían a la gente en la redacción de poemas de amor para sus amores inalcanzables, Miranda Texidor, mi heterónimo, estará promocionando sus servicios en las calles de San Francisco. Ella planea ponerse un disfraz hecho a mano compuesto de un vestido floreado, sombrero, y zapatos. Estará cargando un maletín rodante y portable con mesa, silla, y herramientas de escritura incorporadas. Esta es una acción itinerante que se llevó a cabo por primera vez en la Plaza de la Independencia de Quito, Ecuador en 2007. Esta vez Miranda se presenta con su disfraz y equipo completos, creados especialmente para la occasion. La acción sera conducida en español y en ingles, para asi servir a la población san franciscana.

“Quisiera estar” comienza la canción de los Beatles, “bajo del mar, en el jardín del pulpo, en la sombra”. Ahí donde tiempo y espacio quedan suspendidos, donde el tiempo del deber, del querer, del tener no existen. Sólo el juego el goce, el delirio y el amor, pero amor del pagano, sin dios ni ley. El jardín del pulpo es aquel lugar donde todo es posible, cualquier juego es jugoso, cualquier propuesta es indecente. Ahí quiero estar siempre: de fiesta, con los amigos, con los churos hechos y la falda alzada, jugando sin preocupación en la maravillosa heterotopía que habito en el dibujo. Ahí donde sabemos que nadie nos va a encontrar. “Seremos muy felices tu y yo sin nadie quién nos diga qué hacer….”

“I’d like to be...” starts the Beatles’ song “...under the sea, in the octopus’s garden, in the shade.” There, where time and space are suspended, and things like duties, having, and wanting do not exist. Where only games, pleasure, delirium, and love (pagan love, without gods or law) exist. The Octopus’s Garden is a place where any game is juicy and every proposal is indecent. That’s where I’d like to be: partying with friends and playing without preoccupations in the marvelous heterotopy that I inhabit when I draw. That place where no one will find me. “We’ll be very happy you and I, with no one to tell us what to do...”

Sewing Groups Grupos de Costura en Franja Arte Comunidad

This is the last sewing workshop with women from the coastal town of ENGABAO in Ecuador. Beautiful experience, we will continue with its implementation and follow up. We will be deepening into women´s rights while we continue to sew and maintain this safe intimate space of friendship and confidence.

Este es el último taller de costura con mujeres de la comuna de ENGABAO en la costa del Guayas. Una experiencia maravillosa mientras le damos sostenimiento a La Franja arte Comunidad y a los talleres. Estaremos haciendo hincapié en los derechos de las mujeres mientras seguimos cosiendo y manteniendo este espacio libre y salvo para la amistad y la confianza.

Since 2007 I have created various sewing groups driven by the needs to provide a space for communal gathering, for the recuperation of a feminine space of talk and sharing, and for the community love for socially based sewing. In my initial exploration of this working method, I worked with a women’s collective which was not focused on creating objects devoid of their context. We focused principally on generating sharing, warmth, and community among women. Our first project, realized in the context of Al-Zurich Festival 2007 with women from the South of Quito- Ecuador, was "Regalos" or "Gifts"
a project that involved sewing and dancing as gifts creating an alternative economy of affections and exchanges.

We subsequently created the “30 x 30 Quilt” Project. We asked women from around Latin America to participate by making an autobiographical 30 by 30 centimeter sewn square. We then worked together with artist Andrea Sica’s (from Uruguay) "Belly button project," wherein we sewed our squares together and sent them to Uruguay to be sewn together with their local squares. Most of the women participants were not self defined as artists per se; most were dedicated sewers or knitters in their own right.

Simultaneously, we created another sewing group called "Hilando Fino" on the coast of Ecuador within the context of the artist residency Solo con Natura in 2009. The project invited women from this coastal community to gather together and sew their own personal stories. These women often came with the strong burden of adolescent pregnancies and general violence against them. The project proved to be an excellent channel for their various interests and a great support system. The group has also started to create their own objects such as banners and pillow covers. They are still meeting every week and I sure hope they can continue their group to see it flourish.
